Conscious
I heard the rain patter—as I awoke for life –
The silence of the morning
loomed thick, impenetrable in the air –
As the first breath filled my lungs.
The trickle of water – timely against the glass payne
Fingers and toes wiggling firm, stretching long
For truth in what’s cognizant – God’s hand in pure
Grey – lively trickles, cold and dense—
held pressure to me
The window soon cleared –
And I could finally see.
-Angela Prendergast.
Poem inspired by Emily Dickinson.
Gratified – all glory to autumnal aesthetics
For lilac skies, milky cream clouds, hot cider
For burning leaves that crunch, crinkle, clashing their consonances in
the wind.
For round, peeping hollows gleaming, glittering, carved in fright
Their purpose known to those who admire, sharing the story of the steady night
Maroons, browns, rich in chocolate allure
Delight, dazzling fire burning – ignite
Beauty in the decayed, when things fall to their end
Praise Autumn!

Lancaster Nights
By: Angela Prendergast
Have I told you?
Those Lancaster nights changed me.
The boy in the red mustang —
You knew I grew to hate that car —
Proved more interesting
than stories
of running through cemeteries
to escape trouble
A well-behaved, class act
disguised under flat brim hats and endless “swagger”
A sweet smile;
a flood light in the rain
More thrilling than nights spent in deafening, crowded corners of the dullest, dingy downtown bars.
You, by far, were my biggest jump to safety–
Colliding with expectations and dreams
Becoming reality
Thank you for remaining steady in my most uncertain moments.
-Your Angel.
